Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Thunderstone Base Set - Going through the rules for the first time and ...
by ubiq1er
Hello,So i'm going through the Thunderstone Base Set Rules (as found here : http://www.alderac.com/thunderstonerules.pdf) for the first time and :
1. Page 4, Visit the Village, point 2. : "You can use some, none, or all of the Effects on a card in any order you choose, making sure not to use Effects from destroyed cards."
2. Page 16, the Village Example (second column) : "So, Sue decides to make one last play before buying, and uses the second ability of the Barkeep to generate 2 Gold. Since this destroys the Barkeep, she won’t be able to count the 1 Gold it would have given her. But, with the 2 Gold she gets from destroying the card, she still ends up with 10 Gold to spend. With that 10 Gold she buys a Short Sword and Banish , using the extra purchase allowed from the Barkeep’s first ability"
That seems a little contradictory to me.
I found several posts on BGG and other sites (ex : http://thunderstone.wikia.com/wiki/Barkeep) that say : "Additional purchase options remain even if the Barkeep is destroyed before these purchases are made. "
Well ok, but it still sounds like an exception to the 1st point rule (making sure not to use Effects from destroyed cards).
Is there an official answer to this question ?
Are there other exceptions ?
Did i misunderstood something ?
Do Effects stack (and thus survive even after the card which generated them is destroyed during the same turn) ?
What is the meaning of life ?

Are spells a constant effect or only work at the time of casting?Question concerns Arcane Energies - Makes attacks Magic and draw a card.
I cast Arcane and draw a weapon which I equip on a Hero, is that Hero's attack Magic? Need official if possible to get an app corrected.

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Epic Thunderstone
by Stinger8414
This summer I bought a used version of Thunderstone and 3 expansions all together. I didn't play it until this past weekend. I read through the rules and watched 2 different youtube videos on the rules as well. I then watched Tom Vasel explain the only way to play Thunderstone is the "Epic Thunderstone" way. Then after playing through the game a few times, I have a feeling something is wrong due to the vague explanation of rules on these videos and the poor rule books.
Base set questions:
1. Hero cards/Randomness; In Lord of the Rings LCG and Mage Knight, you place your heroes on the table and use them whenever your turn allows. In Thunderstone, you have to place those heroes in your deck and the only time you can use them is IF they come up in your draw of 6 cards that turn? What if you need to kill a monster in the dungeon and you don't have the right combo? (like no swords or weapons and only iron rations or a torch) This mechanic seems to make defeating monsters really difficult especially if you reshuffle the deck every few turns? Isn't the game based on killing monsters in the dungeon and if you don't know when or how, doesn't that kill the whole premise of the game? Shouldn't the heroes you bought be on the table to use whenever you need? How can you employ any strategy with this mechanic?
2. Weapons cards; (Similar to the Hero question)... shouldn't they be assigned to a hero? Especially since a Mage or Healer should not be able to use a sword (with the whole strength issue)? Why does the weapons go into the discard deck to pull out randomly? This is confusing.
3. Beaten dungeon enemies; When you beat an enemy in the dungeon, the rules state that you place that card in your discard deck. Is that right? A beaten monster card doesn't seem to help you. In fact it seems to "clog up" your hand when you might need a hero or weapon. Why don't you just take a reward of XP and gold, and be done with that beaten monster card?
4. Hero limit and militia; If your only allowed 3 heroes in the base game rules, why would anyone level up a militia to a hero decreasing your "fighter" cards in your deck? If you didn't level up a militia you'd have 3 militia and 3 heroes (6 fighting cards potentially).
5. Dungeon cards face up; The base rules suggest that three dungeon cards get revealed at the start of the game right? Shouldn't those cards be placed face down, because how would you know what is in this dungeon until you go down there (theoretically)?
6. Hand Limit; Does your hand limit increase over the course of the game (from 6)? More than 6 would be really helpful since the randomness and size of your deck will grow.
EPIC THUNDERSTONE QUESTIONS
1b. 3 or more Heroes; If you have all level 1 heroes in three or four piles (Tom Vasel suggests you keep the higher leveled heroes in the box alphabetically to go retrieve later), does that mean you can have more than 3 heroes in your deck? Because the base set suggest that you can only have 3 heroes per player. If you can only have 3 heroes in your deck, how would you know how many heroes you have? Since Thunderstone seems so random having more than 3 heroes seems to be helpful. Does that mean you remove the hero cards (from the table) as soon as every player has 3 heroes each?
2b. Treasures; In one of the expansions there are treasures. The rules of that expansion suggest you place the treasures in the dungeon deck. What if all three monsters in the dungeon have been defeated, and a treasure comes up next in the dungeon? Who gets that treasure card?

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: How to set up the monster deck?
by BimmyJim
I got the Thunderstone starter set and in the rules it just says to put the level 1 guys first, then the level 2, etc.. (there are only 3 monster groups in the set). However, I bought 2 expansions, so obviously I have a lot of monsters (which don't state the level).
How do I make my monster deck?
Thanks,

I purchased the base game (starter set) along with 2 expansions. One of the expansions (Thornwood siege) comes with two dungeon features (Pick Two and Guardian). What are these? Where do I put them? Also, it comes with a Thunderstone "Stone of Blight". What is this?
I read through both the base rule book and the expansion rule book and neither mentions anything about these cards.
Thanks,

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Thunderstone Rule Question
After reading through the rules and playing a round, I had a couple rule questions that didn't seem to appear anywhere in the rule book.
1) When you defeat a monster, it goes into your deck. Many monsters seem to not help you at all and are in fact a hindrance. When/if you destroy a monster card by resting, do you still get the VPs at the end of the game for that monster or is that a penalty for destroying that card?
2) If using a dungeon/battle effect that destroys a card, does the effect of the destroyed card remain for the battle? It seems to since the Spear village card specifically notes that when you destroy the card for +3 attack, it is a total of +5. Does that same thing apply to every situation?
Thank you for any help you can provide!

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Guardian of Torment global effect and new battle/aftermath effect rules in Advance
by jadedlithium
So the Guardian of Torment reads "global: battle effects for monsters are repeated an additional time per battle while the guardian is in rank 0." The original rules say that any battle effect that destroys a card does so after the battle is over. The new rules have given this same effect the new name of aftermath. However, this guardian's effect was not limited to only "aftermath" like effects in the original game. Any effects like gain a curse happen immediately and would be applied twice as well. My question then is this, does his global effect target battle or aftermath effects when playing Advance or both?
I personally think that it should target both battle and aftermath since that's basically what it did before.

Today my friends and I played thunderstone and we came across a question:
if a monster has immunity to sharp weapons and gets only half damage from magical attacks, does (for example the fighter thyrier) make damage without a sharp weapon? I E does his normal attack bonus still work?
Thx for answering

The Shdaow Torment (Magic Attack only) is in rank 1. I have some fighters (no magic), but have a lightstone gem. Since the Lightstone gem is magic, does that give me a magic attack? I think the answer is no, but I want to be sure. Thanks in advance.

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Blacksmith reading interpretatoin
by jadedlithium
This has been bugging me for a while now, but it wasn't worth asking before I started to play with the Epic variant of Thunderstone. This villager reads: "Village: Draw one card. You may buy one additional card if you buy a Weapon." There are two interpretations here that are functionally the same during a normal game but potentially game changing when playing Epic.Interpretation #1: If your first purchase is a weapon, you get a second buy/purchase of anything you want this turn.
Interpretation #2: You can buy anything you want and then get a second buy as long as the second purchase is a weapon.
As I said before, in a normal game these distinctly different interpretations really don't mean much because the village stacks always contain the exact same cards (with rare exceptions like the Village Thief). In Epic, this is not the case because you never know what the next card of a stack is after you buy from it. Because of this, your second purchase choice could change dramatically based on what happens to turns up.
So really this all comes down to whether or not you have to buy the weapon first. Personally, I would lean towards interpretation #1, but it would have made more sense to word it as follows: "If you buy a weapon, you may buy one additional card." Maybe this is just a trivial argument over semantics, but I would really like some insight from what others think about the true intention of this card.

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Can a Magi Staff be used after the Steam Torrent has been defeated?
by Norbert Chan
The Steam Torrent has a global effect: Monsters must be defeated to leave the dungeon hall. The Magi Staff has this Dungeon effect: Destroy the Magi Staff to move one monster from any rank to the bottom of the decl. Refill the Hall. Draw one card.
The three current monsters contain one Steam Torrent. If a person defeats the Steam Torrent, can they then use the Magi Staff to move a remaining monster to the bottom of the deck? I want to say "yes", but I'm not sure if the Steam Torrent's effect remains in play until it is completely removed.

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Banish rearranging hall question
by fu_manchu
Long time lurker, first time poster.I begun my adventure with Thunderstone not so long ago.
The first time I learned about its existence was on the yucata site and after playing few games I was hooked on instantly.
After I have finally bought the game I've been playing it according to the rules provided with the game, but in case of any ambiguity I applied the site implementation rules.
One such ambiguity is the Banish card, which has the Banish card rearranging effect implemented on the site in following manner:
1. Choosing the effect (Rearrange hall)
2. Selecting monster to be put in the 1st rank
3. Selecting monster to be put in the 2nd rank
4. Selecting monster to be put in the 3rd rank
Which can end up the exact same hall order as in before the effect.
So, I've been wondering:
Can the rearranging effect of the Banish card result in the same hall order?
I tried to find an answer in this forum but with no success. Although, it might be so, because I am terrible at it.
Also, there is no mention about it in the official rules 1.4.
As I understand it, the word rearrange suggest that the order must be changed (if possible).
Then again, English is not my first language so could be the cause of my confusion.
What's your opinion?
Perhaps there is an answer to this question in the official guides that I have overlooked. If that's the case, could you point me in the right direction?

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Magic + Attack ?
by DanThe Man
Played my first solo game today (solo rules from wote) with the cards recommended for first time plays with base set. Couple things I want to ask to check I'm doing it right.1. When battling a monster do I simply add attacks AND magic attacks together to form a single attack or are they separate attacks?
2. After defeating a monster I fill the dungeon and start my next turn. Once finishing the next round I don't flip a card to fill the dungeon again because I defeated a monster on the previous round? Is this right. (Remember it's solo rules)
3. From what I can see, once the thunderstone reaches rank 1 you collect it and the game ends... Do any of the expansions introduce a monster you must fight as I have seen in thunderstone advance?
Thanks guys

Is the set up just shuffle the randomiser decks, pick the first 3 monsters, the first 4 heroes and the first 8 village cards?Or do you need to always have certain items in the village for every game? e.g spells, weapons etc?
How do you guys choose what goes in the village. I don't remember reading anything in the rules that says you must have X amount of spells or X amount of weapons in the village...

His ability says 'All items and magic attack spells gain magic attack +1' does that mean all other cards with the word item on it gain +1 magic attack regardless what the item is? e.g ambrosia Item•Food•Magic 'when entering the dungeon all heroes gain strength +2 and attack +1' so this would mean that all Heroes now would get strength +2 and attack +2?↧
