Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Question Re Ogre Mage (Advance)

by andyvw

Searched everywhere, hoping someone can help a guy out on his second game.

Ogre Mage card states: "Battle: Discard 1 card with Magic Attack." Would this include a card like Summon Storm (Dungeon: Magic Attack +2) or only cards such as Snakehead Flair (where Magic Attack is the trait of the card)?

Thanks!

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Questions after the first 2 games

Someone traded Dragonspire to me, but I thought I would ask the questions here since this is the base game.

1) Are "Dungeon" and "Village" actions mandatory? Like if I already know that I can beat the monster, but I have a card that says "Dungeon: Draw a card, ...", do I HAVE to do that, or is it optional? Seems we could speed up the game a little if we could cut things short when we want to.

2) If you have multiples of the same card with the same Village/Dungeon action, can you do all of them on the same turn? Last night we had several people buying the Quartermaster. There were times when they would have 2 or even 3 in their opening hand at the same time. If you draw 3 quartermasters, can you then look at te next 9 cards? This seems a little overpowered to me.

3) Is it only weapons that get "equipped"? We had the stoneforge guys out, and people wanted to equip them with things like Thunder Rings or Iron Rations. I thought that only weapons got equipped.

4) Does a weapon give certain abilities whether or not it is equipped? For example, does the Divine Staff give its light bonus if it is not equipped? What about a Dungeon ability?

5) Much as I enjoyed the game, both of our first 2 games ran about 2 hours. Are there things that we could do to shorten the game a little bit? It felt about 30 minutes too long. (Probably because we had all played Dominion in the past.)

Thanks so much for your help.

Scenario:

Arachnea Evil Druid in dungeon first rank, "Battle: Arachnea gains +2 Health for each Disease revealed."

Player's hand originally included a Disease card, but it is destroyed by a cleric.

Does Arachnea get her health bonus?

If a monster says half attack if magical attack is not present, does it rounds down or up?

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Non-Attacking Heroes and Light

I understand it that (in a dungeon action) heroes which cannot attack do not contribute their light bonus. For example, a Lorigg Thief would not give +1 Light if the party was attacking a Stone Golem, because his attack would be impossible ("Heroes with strength less than 6 cannot attack.").

But is this always true or only for those cases where the rules prevent the light-giving hero from attacking?

What I mean is: in case you voluntarily hold one or more of your party's heroes back and choose not to attack with them, are they able to provide their light bonus then?

Okay, you might ask: when or rather why would you want to do such an exotic move? Well, for example if you had an Elf Wizard (+1 Light, +2 Magic Attack) and at the same time several Magehunters (which give you extra attack if no Magic Attack is present) in your party. You might not want to attack with your Elf Wizard (even though you could!) in this situation, but still desperately need his light bonus...

So, does this subtle distinction between "cannot attack" and "choose not to attack" exist for heroes, especially regarding light?

Or is it as simple as: Hero doesn't attack => Hero doesn't contribute light?

One little follow-up question for the Veris ("Weapons equipped to your heroes gain Light +1"): if my (only) Veris Squire was not attacking, would his effect still trigger? And if yes, would it affect only the weapons of all other attacking heroes?

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: What does "Ignore" keyword mean (TS7 rules)?

$

by Miraculix

I've examined a couple of monster cards from the base game today, regarding their correct conversion to the TS7 rules and in the process, stumbled across these two tricky fellows here:

Darkness (Doomknight, Humanoid) - "Unequipped Heroes cannot attack"
Haunt (Undead, Spirit) - "BATTLE: One Hero cannot attack"

The Thunderstone "Print and Play"-document translates those two traits/effects into:

Darkness (Doomknight, Humanoid, Level 2) - "Ignore unequipped heroes"
Haunt - (Undead, Spirit, Level 2) - "BATTLE: Ignore 1 hero."

So I then searched the TS7-rulebook for an explanation of the "Ignore" keyword, but there's absolutely no definition or reference there!

Am I missing something? Or can this information be found in some other document, maybe? If not, the obvious questions would be:

1) What exactly does the "Ignore"-keyword translate to under TS7-rules? Does it reduce

1.1) Physical Attack and Magic Attack values of the hero(es) to 0?

As this would effectively be the same as "immune to [sth.]", I can't really imagine this being right...

1.2) Physical Attack, Magic Attack and Light values of the hero(es) to 0?

1.3) Physical Attack, Magic Attack and Light values of the hero(es) as well as all attack and/or light values from an equipped weapon of that hero to 0 (this would of course only apply to the "ignore a hero" effect)?

2) Would "Ignore" even cancel all other traits a hero might have and prevent him from using/activating his dungeon effects?

The funny thing is that in the old rules, the respective entries in the card glossary slightly differ, at least with regards to light:

Card Glossary wrote:

Darkness: Heroes without a Weapon equipped have an Attack Bonus of 0, but are still affected by Battle effects.

No mention of light at all, so this sounds a little bit to me as if only the Attack values would be affected (as in "immune to equipped heroes")...

Card Glossary wrote:

Haunt: All Light, Attack, and Magic Attack of that Hero (and equipped Weapon) are reduced to 0.

...while this clearly says that basically NOTHING of the chosen hero can contribute to the party anymore.

So that leads me to the final question:

3) Is "ignore" as a trait (as in the case of the "Darkness" monster) in any way different from "ignore" as a battle effect (as in the case of the "Haunt")?

Thanks a lot in advance for your opinions (or maybe even official clarifications?)!

Hi!

My question is, that on some cards I can see 2 battle effects.

For Example:
Battle: gain 2 diseases
Battle: Destroy one Hero

Do I have to resolve all of them, or I can pick one?

Thanks!

Hello!

My question is, that when I enter the Village, I can resolve any Village effects.
But what if there is more than one village effects on a card?

Example: In case of a Trainer can I destroy a militia to get 2 Xp, AND Destroy the Trainer to get 2 gold?

Thanks!

Hello. I have downloaded the free set of Thuderstone. I printed everything but I have a question. What rules should I use to play? Do the advance or the first set?

I can also see that there are not randomizer cards in the pack PnP. How I can create games in this way?

Many thanks for your attention

Pyre Viper's text states "Each player must either show a curse or gain 2 curses".

When you get a curse, they get put into your discsrd pile and get shuffled into your draw deck, don't they?

So then how does this work? Does my opponent have to have it in his hand or can it be in his draw deck? If he has to show that one is in his draw deck, then he will see his upcoming cards.

Confused a bit.

If I have no hero cards or magic cards, for example: just 6 dagger, Can I still visit the dungeon and fight a monster to put it back to the bottom of the deck? My friend argue it is an illegal move. And thematically speaking, I don't think it make any sense. But is it allowed?

I'm self teaching myself Thunderstone from the edition 1.4 rulebook. I'm usually very good with rules, but I can't for the life of me confirm what I actually do with the XP I gain from killing a monster. I've searched the rules forums, and I'm getting tired of wading through the results. So, obligatory: sorry if this has been asked & answered before.

Do I put the XP in my discard pile (so that I draw them later) or do I keep them off to the side and spend them in the village whenever?

Bonus question: Where is this in the 1.4 rulebook, so I can feel goofy for not finding it?

This game had been collecting dust on my shelf for the past year and finally I decided to pull it out for a solo session. With that said, if I remember correctly to my knowledge, spells do not require light (although I can't find where it explicitly stated in the rulebook). But what happens when you have a mixture of heroes, weapons and spells? e.g. If I bring some Magic Missiles (and heroes + weapons) into the Dungeon, Does Guardian of Night and Abbysal Darkspawn affect me in any way due to my lack of light?

I was the victim of receiving two in the same round last night. Slowed me down greatly.

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Q: Global Light Penalty Monsters in Your Hand...

by MikePole

It is clear that if a monster provides Global Light +2 whilst in the dungeon regardless of its level, all light penalties are reduced by two. We had a wee bit of confusion last night as a question arose: what happens when you have said monsters in your hand. Do they add/subtract light based on the number in yellow above their experience point value?

I argued no because it does not say so in the description but I thought my friends had a valid argument because all other light sources provide you with a number in a yellow background on the left side of the card. So the question is, do these monsters provide light penalties or bonuses for you based on the card when you play it?

When Creeping Death reduces monster health (strength, life point or whatever they are called), what happens to monsters that are reduced to zero?

In a recent yucata game, I played Creeping Death and the first rank monster had a strength of one. When I played Creeping Death, it went to zero and was removed. The Thunderstone was the second rank and the game ended before I could make an attack on the monster in the third rank.

Is this correct behavior?

In general, along those lines, could one kill off two or all three monsters with Creeping Death?

Thread: Thunderstone:: Rules:: Q: Destroying Cards with other cards.

by Death to Bambi

This came up during my last game of Thunderstone where I played with a couple of neophytes, and one of them was really technical regarding the ruling and wording of Pawnbroker.

The thing is this cards says:

Pawnbroker: Destroy ANY card with a gold value to gain its gold value +3.

So what he would do would be destroy cards in the village with it. Now I could not find anywhere saying that for cards to be destroyed they HAVE to be in your hand unless the card says or thta you may not destroy cards in the vilage so now I am a bit confused regarding it.

TLDR: Can Pawnbroker destroy cards in the village and or to destroy cards with village effects, the cards need to be in your hand?

Thanks!
